5 ways to Encourage Breech Baby to Turn: my 3 success stories

Posted on July 9, 2018February 21, 2021 by Jenny Pena

I understand a breech baby in pregnancy to mean, the baby’s  feet are on the lower part of mom’s belly instead of the baby’s head, in simple terms. The ideal position for babies to be born is head first. This might help:

breech positions

We found out Jasmin was in a breech position at about 32 weeks. Sheila, our midwife, asked us to start doing some things to encourage her to turn. Here are some things we tried, though, many more things were suggested.

Two of my favorite resources:

1. Chiropractic:

We were already seeing our chiropractor on a weekly basis when we found out Jasmin was breech. I had broken my tailbone when younger so was going in to get that straightened. He was very excited to be able to help us encourage Jasmin to turn. They do a technique called the Webster Technique. It’s not painful at all and actually just makes a little room for her to turn. We love our Chiropractic family! We continue to get adjusted and even Jasmin gets adjusted!

2. Ocean/Pool:

It was suggested to us to try doing hand stands underwater. This was the funnest of all! First of all I enjoy jumping in the ocean and the pool too. Plus its an excellent exercise. So I would do a handstand and Mr. P would hold my feet for as long as I could hold my breath underwater. I think I may have made it to 20 seconds one time! The ocean was the best because of the waves, having to hop and balance was fun and a workout at the same time. It was actually in the ocean when Jasmin finally turned, though I didn’t realize it til much later.

3. Exercises:

The most common suggestion to turn a baby are a couple exercises you’re encouraged to do a couple of times a day. So you tilt your body by putting pillows under your hips therefore making space on the lower part of your belly. This is supposed to make the baby push enough against your ribs to want to push out of there, it’s really quite uncomfortable. Some people do a couple of things on the lower part of the belly: flash light, play music, place heat, talk to the baby. Checkout the Spinning Babies site for step by step instruction or hire a doula trained in SB!

4. Essential Oils

There are definitely oils that you can use during pregnancy that can give you support for you and baby. Essential oils can help turn your baby! Peppermint, Lavender, Frankincense are a few to start with. Please contact me for more info and safety too 🙂

5. Trust:

The most important is TRUST!

Sometimes the baby doesn’t turn because it will do more harm. Trust our Father knows what he’s doing. The baby WILL turn on time, believe! And if she doesn’t, it will be ok. Our Father is faithful to answer our prayers, remember. Also, it’s ok to give birth breech! We watched so many videos on youtube of home births of breech babies! It can be done!

Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. (Philippians 4:6, 7 NIV)

Jasmin successfully turned 8 days before her birth! We were in the ocean just jumping with the waves when I felt a different movement in my belly. I couldn’t be sure if she had turned or not at that point since my belly was tight from the ocean workout! A couple hours later walking to the car I felt my hip give out and get even more wobbley than I already felt! Sheila says this must have been when she turned! Praise the Lord that she turned! Check out her full story here!

Although there are many suggestions to turn a breech baby, I was determined to stick to the few, simple and easy. I was determined these would do it and if not, well, it was not meant to be!

Remember, much PRAYER, faith, trust, and try these tips 🙂

GOD BLESS!

Thanks for linking up at Friendship Friday! Bethany was lying sideways and had to be turned. She was born a couple of weeks later at home without incident!

WOW! I never learned so much about breech babies. Such an informative post and your darlong baby is just precious. Praise God she came without incident. I had a great-aunt that was born butt-breech {I think that’s called Frank?} and 12 lbs. I thank God it was not me delivering her! LOL
